Learn Piano > Learn Piano By Ear
Some who learn piano by ear already have perfect pitch. They can detect a piano note naturally without having to learn any theory.
Obviously talent like this will place you ahead of many other students wanting to learn piano but this is a skill that can be developed.
It is no suprise either that pianists who play piano from ear without having to learn a song can really enjoy the music without getting too bogged down into the sheet music. Contrary to belief, if you learn piano by ear you are learning piano with your instincts which helps in improvsation.
Jazz players are a fine example of pianists who learn piano by ear and tastefully add flavor to the music as they would like. That's why piano by ear will always be popular music.
Traditionally teachings prioritised students to learn piano theory first and to learn piano by ear much later on simply because to be able to play by ear is considered quite advance even if you've been playing piano for a few years.
Nowadays, even when I attempt to play piano by ear I can still be practicing and figuring out the composer of the song and chord progression before I start to play 'off the mark'. This can be quite time consuming but this is how much traditional piano practice methods have been ingrained into me.
Nevertheless I would still encourage beginners to learn piano by ear as often as possible and simulate and decorate it in their own way because this is where the real piano talent lies.
